It's December 27th, and now that the first string of holidays are over, I decided now is the time to really start dedicating myself to my goal. It's going to be a lot of work, especially for me. I've played road hockey throughout my child and teen years, but never anything serious. I played in two road hockey saturday morning leagues as a kid, but I was just trying to stop the puck with those plastic/foam Mylec cement pads, nothing fancy. No training, just had fun. Years go by, and after I graduate high school I got a job, and my co-worker played roller hockey. Played Roller hockey for 2 years, but again, no real training, no nothing.
Two things lead up to where I am now. A great deal on some pro pads (Itech Vamp 10.8's) and a longing to play ice hockey like no other. Over time I assembled together a set of pads to play ice in, that was a year and a half ago. I started playing, only drop in though, and slowly got the hang of things.
Now, i'm getting very serious about hockey. I'm going to try-out for my university's D1 ACHA hockey team, and I plan on doing everything in my power to make it happen. There are two major things standing in my way though, my weight (6'0, 250lbs) since no team wants a fat goalie nowadays, and what skills I have. My plan is to play as much hockey as humanly possible, and try and lose 50-70 lbs by September of next year. I know it's possible, I know it's going to be a ton of hard work, but I plan on making it happen.
For the most part I plan on following CrossfitFootball.com for my strength and conditioning routine, which is going to focus more on explosive strength and hopefully allow me to keep as much muscle as possible. Of course more cardio than that will be used, even though I really hate cardio unless its some kind of sports.
Each month, I plan on doing the following workout as a benchmark to see how i'm progressing as an athlete. It's going to be 100 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and 100 squats for time. I plan on doing a few drills on the ice measuring my skating ability once a month two and recording them to measure that progress as well.
And of course, any exploits I have in the hockey realm will be put on here as well. This coming Wednesday night I am subbing for two teams in the local "C/D" Beer league. First game starts at 9:30, then I have to run over to the other rink in the arena because my next game starts at 10:15. They know I'll be a few moments late, but i'm hoping more along the lines of that I'll have the stamina to go on for them. The one thing I don't ever want to do is lose a game for a team i'm subbing for when it's my fault. Ex: If we lose 2-0, which happened last game, I cant really win when they don't score any goals.
Anyways, my update for today will be later, with my results from the physical benchmark.
